Lena and Igor follow a strange map into the Hidden Streak Mountains, where the Pass of Silence leads them to a symbol, a hidden staircase, and something listening in the dark.
The Pass of Silence lay wedged between the giant stone walls of the Hidden Streak Mountains, a place the valley people mentioned only in lowered voices. On a cold morning blurred by mist, sixteen-year-old Lena set out there with her best friend Igor, carrying little more than a torch, a few sandwiches, and the old map she had found in her grandfather's trunk. It did not match any atlas she had ever seen.
They crossed a narrow bridge over a stream that ran clear and loud beneath the quiet rocks. Halfway across, Lena stopped. The air had turned colder, sharper, as if the mountain itself had exhaled. She looked down at the map. The paper felt warm in her hands, almost alive.
"Tell me you feel that," Igor muttered, trying for a grin that did not quite land.
Lena did not answer. Ever since the map had slipped out of the trunk on her fourteenth birthday, she had had the uneasy feeling that it had been waiting for her.
An hour later, the trail opened into a small clearing marked on the map by a silver emblem shaped like a dragon with spread wings. The silence there was wrong. Not peaceful, not empty, but thick and watchful. In the middle of the clearing stood a flat stone carved with the same symbol.
Igor crouched to touch it, but Lena grabbed his sleeve. Something had moved behind them. Not a branch snapping, not an animal rustling through the undergrowth. Something else.
A shadow slipped out of the trees. Lena caught a scent like damp stone and old books. The stone beneath their feet gave a deep shudder, and the ground split open with a low groan.
A spiral staircase descended into darkness.
The map flashed blue in Lena's hands. Igor swallowed hard and took a step back, but the whisper came again from behind them, soft and impossible to understand, as if the mountain had finally started speaking.
