Dream Vestibule

Three friends uncover a hidden passage in an old Warsaw tenement and step into a world where imagination feels alive.

The tenement at 16 Wspólna Street had been forgotten by almost everyone in Warsaw. Its plaster peeled in strips, its doors sagged on warped hinges, and the staircase complained under every step. To Natalia, Michał, and Weronika, though, the building was never just a ruin. It was a place that seemed to keep a secret for them alone.

On Thursday evening, as the city settled into its tired glow and the streetlamps threw long ribs of shadow across the pavement, Natalia’s phone vibrated.

Michał: You have to see this. Meet me in 10 minutes in the basement. Don’t ask.

Curiosity won before caution could catch up. Natalia slipped through the narrow stairwell and down into the cellar, where the air was damp, cold, and heavy with the smell of old brick. Michał was already there with a torch in one hand. Weronika stood beside him, pale-faced and silent. Whatever they had found had already stolen their voices.

Michał lifted the beam of light and pointed. At the end of the corridor, on a wall of rough brick, someone had drawn a mark that looked like a cat with too many eyes. It pulsed faintly, as if it were breathing.

Natalia stepped closer. The air around the symbol shimmered, warm as skin. Then the bricks softened, blurred, and began to give way like smoke.

Behind the wall was a passage that should not have existed. It ran long and narrow into darkness, lined with shelves packed with objects no cellar ought to contain: cracked books bound in faded cloth, brass gears no larger than coins, jars filled with points of light that drifted like tiny stars. A sweet, unreal scent hung in the air, and beneath it Natalia thought she heard music, distant and impossibly clear.

Weronika swallowed. “Is this a dream?”

“I don’t think so,” Natalia whispered.

She reached out. The air trembled under her fingertips.

Then footsteps sounded from deeper in the passage.

Something was coming toward them.

A tall figure emerged from the dark, wrapped in robes that seemed woven from smoke and moonlight. Its face remained half-hidden, but when it spoke, its voice was calm and intimate, like a secret remembered in the middle of sleep.

“Welcome to the Dream Vestibule. Are you ready to discover what your imagination can become?”

Before any of them could answer, the cellar door behind them slammed shut with a violent crack.

Natalia turned. The handle jerked once, then stilled. When she looked back, the figure was closer than before, and the corridor beyond it seemed to be breathing in the dark.
