When four friends follow the disappearance of old maps in the city library, they uncover a hidden staircase and something waiting in the dark below.
Kuba had never thought of the city library as a place where anything could happen. On a cloudy Thursday, though, that changed. He, Ola, Kamil, and Natalia had come there to get their homework done among the tall shelves and the hush of turning pages, expecting an ordinary afternoon. Instead, they found themselves standing on the edge of something much stranger.
It started in the old map section at the back of the building. Kamil pulled out a city plan printed more than a hundred years ago, only to freeze. The shelf behind it was wrong. Empty. Not just one map, but the whole section had vanished as if it had never existed. Kuba marched to the front desk and asked the librarian what was going on, but she only lifted her eyes for a second and gave them a look that made his stomach tighten.
"Not everything is meant to be easy to reach," she whispered, as if the words had been waiting for them.
That answer lasted all evening, long after the library had closed and the street outside had gone dark. They came back anyway, four restless shadows slipping through the side entrance with their phones dimmed and their hearts thudding too loudly. The silence inside felt different after hours, heavier, as if the building was holding its breath.
Natalia was the first to notice the door. It was tucked into a corner behind a drooping strip of wallpaper, so narrow and dull that it could have passed for part of the wall. But when she pushed it open, a cold draft breathed out from below. Stone steps spiralled downward into darkness.
They went down one by one. The air grew damp. Somewhere below them, water was moving. And beneath that, faint as a memory, came the murmur of voices.
At the bottom, Kuba’s torch swept across a huge hand-painted map of the city stretched across the wall, its edges curling with age. The same maps they had been searching for were there, laid out like a secret no one was supposed to find.
Then something shifted in the dark behind them.
A pair of eyes caught the light and flashed once before vanishing. The stones under their feet gave a soft, deliberate scrape, and Kuba realised they were no longer the ones doing the searching.
