Disappearing Bells

When the school bell starts fading and then vanishes altogether, Lena and Wojtek go looking for answers. What they find in an abandoned lab is stranger than either of them expected.

The Stefan Banach School looked ordinary in the autumn rain: grey walls, polished floors, and long corridors that seemed to stretch forever. But by October, even the pupils who complained about everything had started to feel that something about the building was off.

Lena sat on the windowsill outside the science rooms, watching dead leaves spin across the playground through a fogged-up pane. Beside her, Wojtek crunched corn crisps from the pocket of his sweatshirt and pretended not to be bored. Then the bell rang.

Or at least, it should have.

The sound was thin and distant, more like it was coming from the end of a tunnel than from the corridor speaker above their heads. Lena frowned.

"Have you noticed that?" she asked. "It’s been getting quieter every day since Monday."

Wojtek swallowed a mouthful of crisps and shrugged. "Maybe it’s tired."

Lena almost laughed, but then Wednesday morning arrived, and the bell was simply gone.

The whole corridor froze. First-years stopped in the middle of the stairs. Teachers came out of their classrooms with confused faces, checking their watches, glancing at the ceiling, and asking one another if anyone had heard anything. The older pupils were the first to turn it into a game, guessing whether the school had finally broken, been hacked, or decided to give everyone an extra five minutes of freedom.

Lena didn’t join in. Something about the silence felt wrong, as if the building was holding its breath.

After lessons, she pulled Wojtek with her down the side corridor toward the headmistress’s office. The hallway was nearly empty, and every step sounded too loud. Just before they reached the office door, Lena noticed a flicker under the crack ahead. Not the yellow glow of a normal lamp. This was colder, sharper, almost blue.

Wojtek slowed beside her. "Do you see that too?"

Lena nodded.

They moved closer to the old technical lab next to the office, the one no one had opened for months. The door stood slightly ajar. From inside came a faint, sparkling sound, delicate and clear, like a bell made of glass.

"Are we really doing this?" Wojtek whispered.

Lena reached for the handle.

Something shifted in the dark on the other side of the door. The light blinked once, then vanished.
