Basia and Franek find a laughing cucumber castle in the garden, and when the spider robots start getting tangled in cucumber whiskers, a green light opens a very strange new mystery.
In the green garden behind the old pear tree stood a small, bright house that smelled of tomatoes, basil, and cucumbers. Basia and Franek played there every day. They raced snails, counted ladybirds, and hid from the wind behind the bean poles.
But one morning, after breakfast, everything felt odd.
A round cucumber with a painted face rolled through the kitchen window and landed with a soft plop on the floor.
Then came another.
And another.
Soon a whole team of cucumbers was rolling across the tiles, shaking with laughter.
Basia blinked. Franek rubbed his eyes.
“Do you see that?” he whispered.
“I do,” said Basia. “The cucumbers are laughing.”
The round cucumbers curled up like green marbles and called out in sing-song voices, “Cucumber, cucumber, laughter brings us together!”
Before the children could ask what that meant, the garden soil gave a tiny wobble.
Up from the earth grew a castle made of cucumbers. Its towers were long and shiny. Its windows were wide and grinning. Its doors were green and wobbly, as if they were trying not to giggle.
And then out popped the strangest spider robots Basia and Franek had ever seen.
They had silver legs, twinkly eyes, and cucumber whiskers instead of thread.
“I am Cucumber Spider,” said one robot, bowing so low its whiskers brushed the grass. “And this is Laughingtron.”
Laughingtron gave a great snort of joy and zipped over the cucumber bridge, nearly bumping into a watering can. The can burst into a fit of giggles. The rake snickered. Even the pebbles in the path seemed to shake with laughter.
Basia leaned closer to Franek and lowered her voice.
“What if this castle is trying to tell us something?” she said.
Franek opened his mouth to answer, but a bright green light flashed from deep inside the castle, and the heavy cucumber door began to creak open...
