Circus of Invisible Shadows

A strange circus appears overnight on the edge of town. Lena and Kuba keep watch, but the show hides something far stranger than acrobats and clowns, and one midnight they slip past the forbidden entrance.

At dawn, when the town was still half asleep, a field on the edge of the woods had become a circus ground. Red-and-white tents stood where there had been only grass the night before, as if they had risen out of the dark in silence. Lena and Kuba were among the first to notice. Their hideout was close enough to see the lamps glowing faintly through the canvas.

There were no barkers shouting at passers-by, no music drifting over the road. The entrance was watched by men in owl masks who stood perfectly still, as if they were part of the scenery. On the fence, freshly pasted posters trembled in the wind: A show for a select few only. Tonight. Midnight.

Lena leaned closer to read the fine print, but there wasn’t any. Kuba crossed his arms and frowned at the tents. He wasn’t the kind to be frightened easily, yet something about the place made the hair on the back of his neck rise. During the afternoon they watched crates carried inside under tarps, never opened in public, and heard sounds that made no sense at all. Not laughter. Not crying. Something in between.

By the time night fell, curiosity had become a dare they could not leave unanswered. They slipped through the bushes behind the tents, ducking under a sagging rope and pressing themselves into the shadow of the canvas wall. Smoke drifted through the air, carrying a sharp, electric smell. Lena lifted the fabric just enough to see inside.

The arena was lit by violet lamps. Performers moved below them, but their shadows were wrong, stretching and twisting in impossible shapes above their heads. The audience sat unnaturally still, whispering under their breath as if they were repeating words they had been taught. Then the lights flickered.

One shadow tore free from its owner and turned toward Lena and Kuba.

Before either of them could move, a hand closed hard on Lena’s shoulder.
