The Circus of the Wandering Stars

Sixteen-year-old Lena and her friend Igor slip into a circus that has arrived without warning. Behind the velvet curtains and bright lights, they find a locked trunk that should not be there.

The Circus of the Wandering Stars appeared on the edge of the city without warning, as if it had rolled out of the dark and decided to stay. By dusk, its vast tent glowed with hanging lights, every bulb trembling gold against the night sky. People were already talking about it in the streets.

Lena had been talking about nothing else for an hour. At sixteen, she was old enough to know better than to chase every strange thing that crossed her path, and young enough not to care. Igor, who lived as if rules were optional, matched her mood perfectly. They pushed through the cold with the rest of the crowd, their breath white in the air, until the smell of popcorn, sawdust, candyfloss, and animals filled the entrance.

Inside, the circus was all colour and noise at first glance. Spotlights sliced across velvet curtains. A woman in silver sequins smiled as she spun through the air. Someone in the ring laughed too loudly, and the crowd laughed with them. But Lena’s excitement tightened into something else almost at once. The air felt wrong, heavy in a way she could not name. Beneath the music and applause, she kept catching a colder sound, like a door closing somewhere out of sight.

Igor noticed the side passage before she did: a narrow gap between hanging canvas and stacked crates where the performers slipped backstage. He grinned, already reaching for her wrist. "Come on," he murmured. "We didn’t come all this way just to sit in the seats."

Lena should have said no. Instead, she let him pull her through the shadows, past dressing-room mirrors and a silent acrobat stretching with his eyes fixed on the floor. Then, through an open door ahead, she saw it: an old trunk bound in iron, chained shut and marked with a warning in uneven letters, Do not open. Under threat of curse.

Before she could speak, something moved inside it.

A metal crash exploded behind them. Both of them spun around. The wardrobe door at the end of the corridor was slowly swinging open, and whatever was inside was taking its time coming out.
