Captain Owl's Missing Compass

Julka and Philip explore an abandoned tree house and discover a strange compass that draws them deeper into a forest of clues, where something unseen seems to be waiting.

Julka had a talent for finding secrets in ordinary places. Her little brother Philip did not, which was why he stayed close beside her as they crossed the backyard toward the forgotten tree house.

It perched high in the old oak at the edge of the forest, its crooked ladder half-swallowed by ivy. They had not climbed up there in months. The boards looked weathered, the windows clouded with dust, and the whole place seemed to hold its breath.

"Do you think anything's still inside?" Philip asked, gripping the ladder.

Julka flashed him a grin. "Only one way to find out."

She climbed first. The tree house was cool and dim, smelling of moss, dry wood, and something older. In the far corner sat a small box, tucked behind a collapsed chair. Philip dragged it into the light and lifted the lid.

Inside rested an old compass.

It was heavier than it looked, with a brass rim and an owl engraved on the top, its round eyes sharp and bright. Julka brushed a thumb across the glass. The needle jerked, quivered once, and snapped toward the north so suddenly that both children froze.

Then a shadow slid across the wall.

Julka spun around. Nothing was there. Only the tree house, the narrow window, and the dark line of the forest beyond it. But from somewhere below came a slow, deliberate tapping, like a stick striking roots one by one.

Philip swallowed. "Julka... did you hear that?"

The compass gave a faint pulse of light. The needle whirled wildly, faster and faster, until it pointed straight at the window and seemed to pull at Julka's hand.

She looked at Philip, and he looked back at her, wide-eyed.

Without speaking, they climbed down and followed the trembling glow into the trees. The compass led them past twisted roots, stone arrows laid in the dirt, and an abandoned telescope pointing at the wrong sky. Near a split oak, they found half a map pinned beneath a flat stone. Across the torn paper, in fading ink, were the words: Only the brave will find the truth.

The compass flashed again, harder this time, and guided them toward a small clearing where an iron box stood buried in the earth.

Julka knelt and reached for the lid.

Behind them, a branch snapped.
