Basia and the Door Behind the Books

Basia discovers a hidden door in the library, and when Filemon slips through it, she finds herself staring into a shimmering, impossible world.

Basia loved the library. She loved the smell of old pages, the hush between the shelves, and the way the librarian spoke in a soft whisper, as if the stories themselves were listening.

One rainy afternoon, Basia curled up on a puffed-up cushion in a quiet corner with a book about dragons. Beside her lay Filemon, her fluffy white cat with the black tip of his tail. He usually slept through everything. But not today. His ears twitched. His whiskers shivered. Then he stood up and padded toward the very last bookcase.

Basia looked up from her book. Something near the wall caught the light and winked at her. She set the dragon book aside and crept after Filemon, careful not to make the floorboards squeak. Behind the rows of books, she found a wooden door she had never seen before. It was old and narrow, with a golden key carved right into the wood.

"Filemon? Have you found a secret?" Basia whispered.

The cat answered with a low purr and tapped the door with one paw. Creak. The sound was tiny, but it made Basia's heart jump. She reached for the handle. It felt cold in her hand, and a little heavy, as if the door had been waiting for her a very long time.

Basia pressed it open.

Blue light spilled out at once, bright and soft as a splash of moonlight. The air on her fingers turned strange, like cloud fluff and sparkling dust. Filemon leaped first and vanished through the doorway without a sound.

Basia gasped and peered inside. Beyond the door, colours swirled and spun like ribbons in the wind. Books were flying everywhere, and above them hovered something that looked very much like a giant pencil, darting through the air.

Basia took one breath, then another, and stepped across the threshold.
