An Evening at the Mystery Slipper Club

Zosia follows a ridiculous notice into a basement party where slippers talk, the DJ only spins cassette tapes, and the night starts behaving like it knows her.

Zosia, a third-year sociology student, had planned an evening of pizza, Netflix, and pretending her seminar notes would revise themselves. Instead, she found a crooked notice taped to the stairwell door: "Whoever finds the slipper club - never come back barefoot!"

She almost laughed. Then she noticed the drawing beneath it: a pair of green slippers with eyes, moustaches, and the kind of expression usually reserved for people who know something you do not. Bored, under-caffeinated, and not remotely in the mood for academic self-discipline, Zosia pulled on her fuchsia slippers and went hunting through the building like a private investigator with rent due.

The clue arrived as a warped snatch of music drifting from round the corner, recognisable and wrong at the same time, as if someone had fed a pop song through a Walkman and asked it to survive. Zosia followed it downstairs to the basement. The door stood ajar. Beyond it, coloured lights flashed over a makeshift bar where an elderly woman in a dressing gown was stirring an energy drink with a quaff, while the DJ worked through a wall of cassette tapes as if streaming had never been invented.

Inside, the Mystery Slippers Club was in full swing. One guest was racing on bamboo stilts; another was attempting the lambada in fish-shaped slippers with dangerous confidence. Zosia had barely registered the scene when she looked down and froze. Her own slippers were moving their toes.

Then one of them cleared its throat and said, in a tone of deep personal grievance, "Well, at last. You were meant to get us here a month ago."

Before Zosia could decide whether to scream, laugh, or check the expiry date on the crisps in her flat, the lights cut out. In the dark, a soft voice rose from somewhere close by, pleased and urgent at once: "Shh... The real surprise is about to begin..."
