The Riddle in Grandma’s Drawer

Ada and Maks uncover a forgotten kitchen drawer in Grandma’s house, and inside is a notebook that seems to wake up on its own.

Ada thought her grandmother’s kitchen was the finest place in the world. It always smelled of cinnamon, warm bread, and the cracked spines of old cookbooks. That afternoon, though, the familiar room seemed to be hiding a secret.

After lunch, Grandma asked Ada and her younger brother Maks to help clear the table. Ada wiped the worktop with a damp cloth, while Maks crouched beneath the table, trying to catch crumbs before the cat could. Then came a soft knock from somewhere near the cupboard.

"Did you hear that?" Maks whispered.

Ada looked up. The cupboard door hung open by a finger’s width, and beside it sat a narrow drawer she had somehow never noticed before. It was coated in dust, the kind that made old things look even older.

"Maybe Grandma keeps sweets in there," Maks said hopefully.

"Or something stranger," Ada said, smiling despite herself. She had always suspected Grandma’s kitchen knew more than it let on.

Ada pulled the drawer handle. The metal was cold against her fingers. Before she could tug again, the drawer slid open by itself with a sigh. Inside lay a small notebook wrapped in a thin silver cord that glimmered as if it had caught moonlight instead of afternoon sun.

"Wow," Maks breathed.

On the cover was a map, but not of any place Ada knew. A teapot stood where the clock should have been. The fridge was marked with a spiral. In the middle of the page, a blurred little figure raised one hand, as if warning them to stop.

Maks gripped Ada’s sleeve. "Is it a treasure map?"

Ada leaned closer. The notebook gave a tiny shiver. Then, without warning, it sprang open, and the first line on the page began to glow.
