Kuba and Lena find a hidden trapdoor in the old school basement and a door no one was supposed to see. Whatever is behind it is already waiting for them.
Kuba and Lena's school was old enough to creak in the wind, and the basement beneath it seemed even older, as if it had been waiting there long before the school was built. The pupils loved to trade stories about hidden vaults and secret passages, but nobody ever believed them.
That changed on a rainy afternoon, when Lena stopped short in the corridor and stared under the stairs.
Something metal was hidden there, almost buried under dust and cobwebs.
She crouched down and brushed the grime away with her sleeve. A trapdoor. Cold, round-edged, and definitely not part of the school they'd known yesterday.
Kuba was nearby, on his knees and growling softly to himself as he pretended to be a police dog on patrol. When he saw Lena waving him over, he sprang up at once.
"This was never here," Lena whispered.
Kuba knelt beside her and ran his fingers over the metal. "Or maybe everyone just missed it."
That was not a comforting answer.
Together they worked the edge up with a ruler until the trapdoor gave way with a faint scrape. Beneath it was a narrow stairway dropping into darkness. Air rushed out from below, carrying the smell of dust, old paper, and something sharp and strange, like a room that had been shut for a hundred years.
Lena pulled a torch from her backpack without a word. Kuba looked at it, then at the black opening.
"You carry that around all the time, don't you?" he muttered.
"You never know," she said, and switched it on.
The beam shook across brick walls slick with pale, glowing lichen. The steps led down too far to count. Kuba went first, trying to look fearless, while Lena followed close behind, gripping the railing so tightly her knuckles turned white.
At the bottom, they found a wooden door they had never seen before.
On it hung a crooked sign, nailed in place so hard the wood had split around it.
DO NOT OPEN
SECRET ROOM
Lena let out a breath that sounded half like a laugh and half like a gasp. "That is the worst warning I've ever seen."
Kuba reached for the handle anyway.
Before his fingers touched it, a soft whisper slipped through the crack beneath the door.
Then the handle turned from the other side.
