A Night at Bubble Deluxe

On a stormy night, Filip, Zośka, and Paul hide out in Bubble Deluxe and discover that the laundromat has a taste for strangeness, bad timing, and doors marked Staff Only.

Rain hammered the glass of the Bubble Deluxe Automatic Laundromat, and the neon sign outside flickered so hard it looked drunk. The place had a reputation for swallowing lonely socks and late-night moods, but tonight it had three unusual customers: Filip, a distracted graphic designer hauling a bag of unicorn socks; Zośka, who treated black humour and coffee as food groups; and Paul, a programmer who spoke about detective series as if they were sacred texts.

The machines started up with a metallic sigh, filling the room with the sharp smell of detergent and damp wool. Outside, thunder rolled across the city centre. Then lightning flashed close enough to turn the windows white, the lights stuttered, and a can of Coke shot out of the vending machine with a loud clunk.

For a second, all three froze. Then Zośka laughed so hard she had to lean against the washing machine. Filip picked up the can like it might accuse him of something. Paul stared at the vending machine, narrowing his eyes the way he did when a plot twist was about to insult his intelligence.

Zośka jabbed at another button. The machine whirred, coughed, and delivered a plastic bath duck instead of coffee. That was apparently the moment they all agreed the night was no longer normal. If the laundry was offering drinks and toys, it was probably hiding a few better secrets as well.

Behind a leaning stack of lost socks, they found a narrow door with a faded sign: STAFF ONLY. Of course that only made it more interesting. Zośka wrapped her fingers around the handle and pushed.

The door opened without a creak. Inside was a dim room lined with old posters from the nineties and one machine in the middle that looked like it had been assembled by a bored genius with a grudge against washing cycles. Part washing machine, part piano, part dentist's chair, it sat under a red warning light and hummed with a soft, impatient rhythm.

Then a speaker crackled overhead, and a cheerful voice said, 'Please remain where you are. The special cycle is about to begin.'
