In a quiet corner of a wide forest, where the blue stream flashed between reeds, lived Bruno the badger and his best friend Valeria the squirrel. They kept watch over the forest’s secret treasure: a football that glowed like a captured firefly whenever night fell. No one was supposed to touch it. Especially not Zenek the hare.
Zenek had a gift for snatching things that were not his and vanishing before anyone could blink. So when he spotted the shining ball resting in the grass, his whiskers twitched, his paws sprang forward, and off he raced like a gust of wind. Bruno barked. Valeria squeaked. Together they shot after him through brambles, over roots, and past startled birds flapping from branch to branch.
But Zenek was fast. Much too fast. By the time the sun began to sink behind the trees, he had disappeared into the forest, and the path behind him was empty. Bruno stopped beside the stream, puffing hard. Valeria’s tail flicked once, then again. She stared into the shadows, thinking so hard her ears went still.
Then her eyes flashed. “I know,” she said, and gathered an owl feather, a carrot, and a length of string. Bruno stared at the odd little pile, then at the dark trees ahead. Somewhere in the branches, something rustled...
