The Whisper at Pomegranate Lake

In the mist-bound village of Silver Stand, Lena, Daniel, and Maks follow an old map to the lake shore and uncover a light beneath the water that should not exist.

Silver Stand clung to the edge of Pomegranate Lake as if the mist itself had decided to keep it there. The village was small, quiet, and stubbornly untouched by the world beyond the hills. At dawn the lake shone like dark glass; by evening it looked deep enough to swallow the sky. People in Silver Stand were used to looking away from its farther shore.

Lena never could. She had spent years studying the faded map nailed to the wall of the schoolhouse, tracing its crooked lines and strange notations with the kind of attention other people reserved for locks or secrets. Daniel treated the map like a puzzle that might finally be solved if he stared long enough and refused to believe in nonsense. Maks believed in whatever might break the sameness of village life, even if it arrived wrapped in trouble.

That afternoon, clouds pressed low over the hills, and the wind shifted in sudden, uneasy bursts. It carried the smell of wet stone, pine sap, and something sharper beneath it, something metallic and cold. Lena led the way along the narrow path toward the rocky point on the southern shore, gripping the old compass her grandfather had left her. Daniel kept checking the bends in the path against the map. Maks lagged behind, scanning the reeds and the grey water as if he expected the lake to answer him.

When they reached the old pier, the surface of Pomegranate Lake had gone unnaturally still. Mist drifted across it in thin, torn layers. Somewhere in the reeds, something tapped in a slow, deliberate rhythm. Lena stepped onto the weathered boards and knelt at the edge. The water should have been cold. Instead it was warm against her fingers.

The compass in her palm jerked once. Then the needle began to spin so fast it blurred. Daniel leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "That’s not possible."

Before anyone could answer, Maks pointed at the lake. A faint blue glow was rising from below the surface, pulsing deeper and brighter with each breath. The water shivered around it. A chill cut through the air, and then the ground under the pier gave a slow, unmistakable tremor, as if something vast had just shifted in the dark below...
